Marketing Forward Podcast Episode 7 – Spring Has Finally Sprung and Let’s Get Networking

Show Notes

Intro:

Welcome to the Marketing Forward Podcast! Today we have Seth Goldstein of Goldstein Media, David Birnbaum of Tasty Fish Marketing, and Ashley Owens of Ashley Assists!

Well, it finally seems like Spring has sprung! The snow storms are behind, us and the weather is getting nicer. So let’s get started with today’s show!

Topics:

Networking

  • Ways and places to network. It’s not always the way you think
    • Traditional business card exchanges are just one way, if you do it right
    • The stranger next to you may be the perfect person to network with…at a business meal, a cup of coffee or an evening cocktail
    • Conferences can be a great place to network…or in the meeting hallway at a conference!
    • On the train or plane…be aware of those around you while commuting and traveling
  • Approach to networking
    • It’s about quantity AND quality
    • Think first about how you can help others!
    • Be open to new types of connections, and don’t judge too quickly
    • It’s so important to establish a meaningful rapport…before trying to establish a meaningful business connection

Marketing

  • There can be a lot of overlap with your marketing and networking activities
    • Scotch/Whiskey analogy…not all marketing is networking, and all not all marketing and networking is created equal
    • A key is to know your objectives and strategy…well before going into your tactics!
    • Some marketing tactics feel like networking; like social Media and word of mouth
    • Others fall outside everyday networking tactics; like print, TV, and direct mail
  • Based on your target, some activities–marketing and networking–will be highly efficient while others will fall short
    • Important to consider the objective, and type of connection you’re trying to make
    • Are you trying to build awareness, generate trial or repeat business
    • Even the best offering will fail if marketed to an uninterested audience
    • Plan your work and work your plan…with timely and effective follow up!

Show Notes

Intro:

Happy 2018 Everyone! Welcome to the Marketing Forward Podcast! I’m Seth from Goldstein Media, with me is David Birnbaum of Tasty Fish Marketing, Ashley Owens of Ashley Assists!

Since this is the New Year, we thought we’d talk about how to get started on the right foot with your marketing and business networking.

Topics:

  1. The beginning of the year is a great time to review 2017. What did you do right or wrong? What can be improved upon? What one thing do you wish you could do better this year?
  2. If you haven’t been out to some business events, start. Join a Chamber, check out a networking group like PowerMatch (full disclosure all three of us are members of PowerMatch and Ashley and I work for them).
  3. Go to a new networking event, there was a great event in Philadelphia at The Pyramid Club.  In addition to meeting some great people, money paid to attend went to a great cause!
  4. Is this the year for a rebrand or a Website/online refresh?

Tasty Fish Marketing Podcast Episode 2 – Let’s Go Fishing

We’ve made it past episode 1!

Today, David and Seth address a topic that needs to be discussed before diving deeper into the podcasts. Why do you need marketing? What exactly is marketing?

I guess we should start out with how we each define marketing is and why it matters to your business. We’re going to do our best to keep it to 30 minutes, because both of us could talk about this topic forever!

  • David explains what marketing is. Holistic view
    • Big picture…use fishing analogy
    • Who needs it…small businesses and large businesses?
    • Why is it so important…Planning purposes, goal setting/metrics, staying in-touch with your current and targeted customers
      • What else do they want/need?
      • Are you still interested in continuing to engage with them?
    • Is marketing and sales the same thing?
  • Seth explains how digital impacts traditional marketing and what it entails
    • Big picture
    • Who needs it
    • Why
  • Why is digital marketing so hard to understand?
  • How does digital marketing help the bottom line?
